Roofing Scams

The average Calgary homeowner isn’t particularly familiar with their roof. They’re not knowledgeable on how a roof is put together or repaired. (And that’s good news for us, or we’d be out of a job!) However, Calgary roofers should still be held to a high level of scrutiny, and unfortunately, not all roofers are reputable. Here’s how to tell if your roofing job was done poorly.

No Old Shingles.

Removing the old shingles from your roof is a labour-intensive but important task. Some roofers like to cut corners and save labour costs by just adding the new shingles on top of the old ones. However, this cheat will significantly weaken the durability of your new shingles. You’ll be at risk for leaks, and you’ll need to replace the new roof a lot sooner. Fortunately, the old shingles being stripped off of your roof are pretty easy to spot, so you’ll be able to catch any shady roofing at this stage with ease.

New Shingles are Installed Properly.

In order to make your home as storm proof as possible, shingles are fastened to your roof with four evenly spaced nails. Nails should be driven into the shingles properly. If the nails are driven in too far, it can’t secure the shingle properly. If the nail is not in far enough, it will likely damage the shingle over time. Now that you know what to look for, wait until your contractor is finished for the day then take a peek at the work. Everything should be water tight against dew and possible overnight rain. If you’re not familiar with how to safely move around on a roof, it’s best to stay on your ladder. Otherwise, you may get injured or damage the roof.

Choosing a Reputable Contractor is the first step in avoiding a scam. Ask around your friend and family network, has any of them gotten their roof done lately? Was their contractor any good? If word of mouth doesn’t work, turn to the internet. Call up several contractors and ask them for references and proof of insurance. A reputable contractor should be happy to provide you with both. Be sure to meet with your contractor in person. A new roof isn’t cheap, so you’ll want to trust the person you’ve hired to work on your home.
